Nuclear Spin Relaxation within Interstellar Grains
نویسنده
چکیده
We identify a new mechanism of internal dissipation of rotational kinetic energy in spinning dust grains, arising from the reorientation of nuclear angular momentum, e.g., spins of protons. Grain rotation induces magnetization of the nuclear spin system, with net alignment of nuclear spins parallel to the grain angular velocity. When the grain does not rotate around a principal axis, the nuclear magnetization vector precesses in grain body coordinates, resulting in dissipation of energy. The analogous process involving electron spins was discovered by Purcell and termed “Barnett relaxation”. We revisit the physics of the “Barnett relaxation” process and correct the estimate for the Barnett relaxation rate. We show that nuclear relaxation can be orders of magnitude more important than Barnett relaxation. This finding implies that the processes of “thermal flipping” and “thermal trapping” are important for a broad range of grain sizes. Subject headings: ISM: Atomic Processes, Dust, Polarization

متن کاملResonance Paramagnetic Relaxation and Alignment of Ultrasmall Grains
A mechanism of enhanced paramagnetic relaxation for rapidly rotating interstellar grains is presented. We show that the Barnett magnetization that arises from grain rotation ensures that paramagnetic absorption happens at its maximum efficiency, i.e. the conditions for paramagnetic resonance are automatically fulfilled. The differences between the predictions of classical Davis-Greenstein relax...
متن کاملVelocities and Rotational Rates of Interstellar Dust Grains
Interstellar dust grains exhibit complex dynamics which is essential for understanding many key interstellar processes that involve dust, including grain alignment, grain growth, grain shattering etc. Grain rotational and translational motions are affected not only by gaseous collisions, but also by interactions with ions, photons, magnetic fields etc. Some of those interactions, e.g. interacti...

Polarimetry is one of the most informative techniques of studying magnetic fields in molecular clouds. How reliable the interpretation of the polarization maps in terms of magnetic fields is the issue that the grain alignment theory addresses. We show that grain alignment involves several processes acting simultaneously, but on different timescales. We explain that rotating dust grains get subs...
متن کاملA Possible Difference in the Surface Relaxivity of Costal and Inland Sands
The 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spin-lattice relaxation rate of hydrated sands is related to the surface-to-volume ratio of the voids or pores between the hydrated sand grains and the surface relaxivity of the grains. The electron spin resonance (ESR) signal is often used to predict the relative surface relaxivity as the surface relaxivity is thought to be proportional to the concentra...
